Christopher Saxton created the first atlas of England and Wales between 1574 and 1579; which was also the first national atlas of any country. The atlas enjoyed royal patronage as the driving force behind its creation was William Cecil, Lord Burghley, chief advisor to Elizabeth I through much of her reign. The
